Hatha. Ashtanga. Restorative. Iyengar. Vinyasa. Power. Anusara. It's all yoga. Though it sounds a lot like Greek if you're not familiar with the practice. I'm here to make sure your online shopping for yoga gear is nowhere near as confusing as choosing a studio or style — and feels nothing like attending a Bikram class. Confused? Find helpful information for beginners on YogaJournal.com.

The truth is, even those of us who've done yoga for a decade don't always know exactly what we're doing in class and why. None of us can expect to absorb thousands of years of wisdom in a set period of time. Yoga is a process, just like any other pursuit. The more you do it, the better it gets.

All that considered, it certainly helps to walk into class comfortable and prepared. You need clothing that moves with you, a good mat, and even a strap and a yoga block or brick if you don't want to borrow one from the studio. You never know when you might want to strike a pose at home.
