The Best of Sundance DVDs
When you're online shopping for your next movie rental from Blockbuster.com or Netflix.com, it won't hurt you to venture beyond the new releases. And considering that the Sundance Film Festival is currently in full swing in Park City, Utah, I'm taking this opportunity to suggest some of the best movies to come out of past festivals. Rent them or buy them ... either way, you're sure to enjoy them:
Big Night
Tony Shalhoub and Stanley Tucci play humble Italian brothers trying to keep their authentic Italian restaurant in business. This quietly comical story is told amidst mouth-watering footage of food artfully prepared — to perhaps the most enjoyable upbeat soundtrack ever orchestrated.
Winged Migration
The glorious cinematography. The magical musical score. Real birds with captivating personalities. This documentary follows the migratory patterns of birds on all seven continents. It's about instinct. Survival. And of course, the beauty of nature.
Spellbound
You don't have to be a former elementary-school spelling-bee champ (like me) to care about the handful of National Spelling Bee contenders portrayed in this lovable documentary. Near the end, "Spellbound" is as exhilarating as any Hollywood thriller.
Whale Rider
This moving masterpiece centers around Maori culture on the coast of New Zealand. A young girl, Pai, grows up stronger and smarter than the boys — and capable of being chief. But her traditional grandfather won't allow her to fulfill the destiny she believes is hers.
Murderball
Life changes when you're confined to a wheelchair. But that's apparently because you finally figure out what you're made of. Not for the faint-hearted, this inspiring (and then some), audience-award-winning documentary follows a team of quadriplegic rugby players as they train for the Paralympic gold medal in Athens, Greece.
